Audience Research Discussion

Alongside my audience research questionnaire, I organised a group discussion with a group of six film enthusiasts, all under the age of eighteen. The idea of this discussion was to research into young teenagers’ opinions in a way that would best suit them.
I tricked the group into believing that I did not have an idea for my film and I told them they were my group of writers. I gave them a brief explanation about Social Realism in films, and then guided them in a discussion which lead them onto thinking what sort of Social Realism film they would best enjoy seeing.
My film focuses on the rich nation of England and the financial difficulties that it faces in current times. The film will be about a rich business CEO who falls victim to the credit crunch. This is not an issue that social realism films often deal with as they are usually about poverty and the underprivileged societies in the nation. In order to make sure that this audience research would be successful, I need the group to think outside of the box.
From the beginning of our fifteen minuet talk they quickly discovered the stereotypical issues as seen in social realism films. This lead me onto asking them what ideas would be different yet just as exciting to watch. The group immediately thought about rich people. They imagined a story about a famous celebrity and a story about the rich and powerful religious people in the world. Following this, they thought about business people and discovered their own idea’s of the credit crunch. They all agreed that a film about the credit crunch would appeal to a whole new audience and be just as successful and exciting to watch.
